Crab Curry Andhra Style

                     My suggestion for best tasting crab curry when buying crabs is to try to find female crabs as they taste better than male crabs. It’s easy to differentiate female crabs. when u turn the crabs on their back, you can see a “U” shape where male crabs have a “v” shape. Female crabs with egg taste the best.

In case u can’t find blue crabs or small crabs, you can use king crabs as well. Ask the butcher to separate the legs & break the body into 4 pieces. The legs have to be boiled & then we remove the meat from the legs and make it into a separate curry or add to this curry. King crab legs are hard to chew or bite into, whereas the blue crab legs are a little softer to bite into.

Poppy seeds have to be roasted before grinding or else they may not grind well in the paste with the coconut.

You can always change few ingredients according to your choice to make it match your taste buds.

Ingredients

  • 4 BLUE /SMALL CRABS WITH LEGS CLEANED & LEGS SEPERATED
  • 1 MEDIUM SIZE CHOPPED
  • 2 GREEN CHILLIES CHOPPED
  • 1/2 BUNCH SPRING ONIONS CHOPPED
  • 3 TBSP GINGER GARLIC PASTE
  • 3 TBSP CORIANDER POWDER
  • 2 TSP POPPY SEEDS
  • 2 TSP FRESH COCONUT GRATED
  • 1/2 TSP TURMERIC
  • 2 TSP CHILLI POWDER
  • TO TASTE SALT
  • 1/2 TSP GARAM MASALA
  • 4 PCS CLOVES WHOLE
  • 2 PCS CINNAMON WHOLE
  • 1 PC STAR ANISE WHOLE
  • 5 TBSP OIL
  • CILANTRO CHOPPED

Instructions

  • Heat a pan and add some oil. When the oil is hot , add whole spices and onions, chilies and sauté them for 2 min.
    Crab Step1
  • Add turmeric, ginger garlic paste and fry them until the raw smell of ginger garlic paste goes away .Add half of spring onion greens

  • Add crabs with legs and some salt & mix them well. Cover it with a lid and simmer for 10min stirring in between.

  • Add red chili powder and mix well.

  • Add a cup of water & let it cook for 5min. Add some coriander powder & mix well . let it simmer for a couple of minutes.

  • Lightly roast the poppy seeds &grind them with fresh coconut . Add little water & make it into a paste.

  • Add the paste into the curry and allow the curry to thicken until desired consistency.
    Crab Step7
  •   Add rest of the spring onions ,cilantro & garam masala and mix well.
